Winnifred Jean Wilcox Brown, 95, died February 25, 2026 at the Caribou Health Center following an extended illness. She was born in Washburn, January 29, 1931 the daughter of John and Nettie (Kennard) Wilcox. She attended Washburn and Fort Fairfield schools. On August 24, 1949 she married Donald C. Brown who predeceased her on July 18, 2007. Together, Don and Winnie farmed potatoes on the Brown family farm where they raised their two daughters, Barb and Ruth. Winnie was a true Aroostook County pioneer woman. She was driving farm trucks and tractors at a time when women were told they were incapable of such things. She was equally comfortable wearing work gloves on Saturday and pearls on Sunday. The dozens of youth who picked potatoes in the Brown farm fields will remember fondly the home baked cookies and brownies Winnie delivered to the field nearly every afternoon during harvest. Winnifred was a member of the Gray Memorial United Methodist Church in Caribou, a life member of the Lister-Knowlton V.F.W. Post 9389 Ladies Auxiliary, and the Senior Citizens Club in Presque Isle. She is survived by her daughter, Ruth Wood and husband James of Pineville, LA, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild on the way, as well as her sister-in-law, Nancy Brown Gill of Wildwood, Florida. In addition to her parents and her husband Donald, she was predeceased by her daughter, Barbara Warne, her siblings, Melvina, Genevieve, Juanita, Darris, Marie, and Thomas, three sons-in-law, James Jester, Charles Atwood, and Gary Warne, her sister-in-law, Priscilla Brown Nylander and her husband, Keith, and her brother-in-law, Fred Gill. She was also predeceased by a special nephew with whom she and Don had a very close relationship, Rod McIntyre. Graveside services will be held in the spring at the Woodland Cemetery.
