NEW SWEDEN and BANGOR – Virginia “Ginny” Fredeline Erickson, 90, passed awaypeacefully, surrounded by her loving daughters, at her home in Bangor on April 13, 2020, after a brief period of declining health. She was born in Perham, on May 24, 1929, to Richard and Lillian (Landeen) Rasmussen, the third of six children. Virginia was very proud of her Danish and Swedish heritage and always reminded her family that they were part Dane. With her Scandinavian background, came the Scandinavian touch in the kitchen. Her graham cracker pie was always a treat at the dessert table at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Virginia married Oscar Erickson in 1950, and they were married for 63 years, until his passing in 2013. Oscar and Ginny lived in New Sweden and were loving and very devoted parents of five daughters, followed by seven grandchildren, and three great grandchildren, and attended hundreds of games, concerts, races, and recitals. They hosted many birthday parties, holiday celebrations, and cookouts at their home on Station Road, often with Swedish music playing in the background on the turntable. Memories were made there that will never be forgotten. Ginny’s grandchildren were her pride and joy, and she was always beaming when she could introduce them to her friends and neighbors at Solstice Senior Living, her home for the past nine years. As kids, her grandchildren were always excited for sleepovers at Grammy and Grampy’s house. The rush to the breakfast table the next morning was always slowed with Grammy’s words, “Did you wash your hands?”...a lesson they all carry with them to this day. Ginny loved watching and listening to her granddaughter Aliza and husband Kit performing Swedish tunes on the violin and guitar. Ginny worked as a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse before becoming a full-time Mom, and later worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a clerk in the New Sweden Post Office until her retirement. She had a keen interest in politics and government and served on the school board in New Sweden. Ginny was a lifelong and dedicated member of Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church. Ginny loved the daily crossword puzzle in the Bangor Daily News, seldom missing a day, and loved to play cribbage in the afternoon with Steve. She also enjoyed visits at Solstice from her niece Carmen. Every night her television was tuned to Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, and the Andy Griffith Show, many episodes of which she knew by heart. Ginny will also be remembered for knowing many songs of her youth, always singing them to her grandchildren, and in later years, to anybody who would request. Ginny taught us all how to be kind and fair, always pulling for “the little feller.” She always made sure that one grandchild did not receive one penny more than any of the others when Christmas came around. In addition to her parents and husband, Ginny was predeceased by sisters Lillian and Edith, and special sisters-in-law Irene and Shirley. Ginny is survived by daughters, Jasmine, Valerie and husband Glenn, Kristi and fiancé Steve, Tania and husband Tom, and Vanessa and husband Greg; seven grandchildren, Jason and Andrea, Jonathan and wife Darcey, Andrew, Lucas and fiancée Kate, Aliza and husband Kit, Alexis, and Deanna; three great-grandchildren Denver, Aubrey, and Theodore “Theo” Rasmussen Vaughan Soden; sister June and husband Reg, sister Cynthia, and brother Greg and wife Louella; in-laws, Clayton, Janet, Patsy and husband Dick, and special nephew Erick, wife Nicky, and their children Kate, Jack, and Ethan. Ginny also leaves behind many caring nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. In addition, the family would like to thank Ginny’s dear friends at Solstice.
