Ursula Gervais Johnston

Caribou and Portland

Ursula Gervais Johnston, 82, died at her Portland residence on May 1, 2024. She was born in Madawaska on August 28, 1941, the daughter of Leonard and Cecile (Daigle) Gervais.

Ursula graduated from Madawaska High School in 1959 and then the University of Maine at Fort Kent with a Bachelors of Science degree in Elementary Education in 1963. She excelled in athletics while at the University of Maine at Fort Kent. 

She taught in the Caribou Schools at various elementary levels until pursing further education to become an Elementary Art Teacher. She retired after 27 years of service in the Caribou School System to travel throughout the United States with her husband Gary in their motorhome. From 1992, she spent her winters at the Schalamar Creek Golf Community in Lakeland, Florida. Ursula enjoyed crafts with a special emphasis on pottery. Also, she enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing. She truly enjoyed competitive golf in Maine, New Brunswick, Canada and Florida. 

In addition to winning several Club Championships and various other tournaments, she was most proud of winning, twice, the Florida State Senior Olympic Title and competing at the National level. She was honored to play with LPGA members in the J.C. Penney Classic at Innisbrook, Florida. Also, she was honored to play in several Futures Tour/Pro Ams in Lakeland. 

Ursula was predeceased by her husband, Gary Johnston, her parents, her brother Joel, and other family members. She will be sadly missed by her step-daughter, Catherine of Raymond, a brother, Ronald Gervais and wife Rolande of Madawaska, special nieces, Nora Uricchio and husband Bob of Connecticut, Debbie Gervais of Massachusetts, and Donna Gyorda and husband Andy of New Hampshire, one nephew, Michael Gervais and wife Rita of Biddeford. Many special grand-nieces, grand-nephews, and extended family. 

Friends are invited to visit with the family Thursday, May 16, 2024 from 9AM until 11:15AM at the Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir Street, Caribou. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:30AM at the Parish of the Precious Blood Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Interment will be in the New Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements by Mockler Funeral Home, Caribou.
