With profound sadness we share the passing of Philip M. Doak on July 15, 2026, at Cary Medical Center in Caribou. Born in Caribou on April 2, 1940, Phil was the son of Adeline (Bell) Doak Hammer and Edgar W. Doak. He attended Caribou High School and was a longtime member of Grey Memorial United Methodist Church, and more recently Lidstone Methodist Church.
Phil was industrious from a young age, growing up on a farm and plowing gardens after school until dark as a young teenager. He started his career in retail, working his way up through the ranks at the local F.W. Woolworth Store, ultimately managing Woolworth stores in Caribou, Fort Fairfield, and Presque Isle. When Woolworth pulled out of Maine, Phil followed his passion and opened a small retail establishment in April of 1974 on Sweden Street called Phil’s Plant Shop. The new venture was a success, and he relocated to a larger location on Washburn Road two years later. The business grew considerably over the next few decades, becoming Phil’s Florist and Greenhouses, one of the largest and most diversified locations of its type in northern Maine. With his beloved wife Jackie managing the floral side of the business and Phil managing the growing and landscaping operations, the two operated the establishment for more than 32 years until their retirement in 2006.
Not in their nature to slow down in retirement, Phil and Jackie stayed busy with farming activities, including raising sheep and making maple syrup on their farm in Woodland. They were regular vendors at farmers markets in Caribou and Presque Isle, selling lamb, jams, baked goods, and other products.
Phil is survived by his son Timothy and his wife Cheri of Orrington, and by his son Gregory of Mapleton; grandchildren Brittany Doak-Hebert and her husband Kris Hebert of Orrington, Sarah Scales and her husband Matt Scales of Windham, Carter Doak and his wife Monica Doak of Fort Fairfield, and Janelle Doak of Monticello; great granddaughters Alethea Doak and Hallie Doak of Fort Fairfield; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is also survived by a sister, Helen Ouellette and her husband Wayne Ouellette of Griswold Connecticut, and by a brother Russell Doak and his wife Charlotte Doak of Caribou. He was predeceased by Jackie, his beloved wife of more than 63 years, and by brothers Robert Doak of Athens, Alabama and Bernard Doak of Deland, Florida.
A private committal will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Caribou.
