Patrick Donald Bither, 60, died July 23, 2025 in Caribou following a brief but intense illness with cancer. He was born in Presque Isle, September 1, 1964 the son of Vayne and Donna (Webb) Bither. Patrick attended New Sweden Consolidated School and was a 1982 graduate of Caribou High School. He served in the United States Navy from 1983-1986 as a Hull Technician aboard the USS Valdez. Pat met his wife, Marjorie Smith while they both worked at the Caribou Agway store. They began dating July of 1990; their whirlwind courtship lasting a year. It was a happy day when they said their wedding vows on July 13, 1991, in front of family and friends; recently celebrating their 34th wedding anniversary together. Over the years, Pat would comment how much he appreciated their life together, and their relationship and how special it was, even down to the fact they could discuss anything together. Pat and Marj supported each other through various hardships that life sent their way, cementing their marriage even more.
They celebrated many of life’s joys together, including the births of their three beloved sons that were Pat’s pride and joy; he always valued any time with them. Welcoming two wonderful daughters-in-law that he loved having as part of the family, as well as greatly appreciating the role they play in Pat’s sons’ and grandsons’ lives. Pat was also generously blessed with three awesome grandsons that he absolutely loved. He loved seeing them as well as getting pictures or videos of them and hearing about their everyday antics.
Pat was employed at RSU 39 of Caribou for the last 9 years doing maintenance and driving bus. He often said, of all the jobs he had-this was his favorite one, valuing the friends he made while there. Pat loved every minute of the 11 years he coached for the Northstars Little League team in Stockholm, where all 3 of his sons played throughout their Little League careers. Another meaningful chapter in Pat’s life was that he was a member of the Caribou Lodge #170 A.F. & A.M. where, while being there old friendships were continued and new friendships were forged. Over the years, Pat would build various projects to enhance their home. A recent one being a back deck with seating to chat with each other or with company. One of Pat’s favorite hobbies was talking and telling stories with friends and family, typically sitting in his garage. Cigarette in one hand, phone in the other and a cold drink by his side. Pat is fondly remembered by those close to him, when they phoned and asked Pat what he was doing, he would reply “Drinking a beer and smoking a cigarette.” Pat recently learned the art of cooking with a smoker and enjoyed inviting people over for a meal. In fact, Pat loved having large crowds over for a few hours of food, fun and fellowship. He also dearly loved to aggravate and tease people around him. During his last couple days, he opened his eyes and looked around the room to see Marj, Levi, Jake & Kevin sitting around him. He joked and said, “What are you guys doing sitting around this place. Go do something fun. Get out of here, go rob a bank or something.” If you knew Pat, you knew how much he loved his pets. They were members of the family, with the most recent being Hazelnut; and he would happily incorporate pet stories and anecdotes into his conversations.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Marjorie of Caribou, are their three sons, Levi Bither with his wife, Taylor and their son, Alexander of St. Petersburg, FL; Jacob Bither with his wife, Cassandra and their sons, Carter and Jack; and Kevin Bither all of Caribou. Two brothers, Douglas Bither and wife Louise of PA, Joseph Bither of Stockholm, a sister-in-law, Gala Bither of Caswell, his step-father, Raymond Cyr of Caribou, and nieces Megan, Adrianna, Zowie and Paige. Pat was blessed with many special friends who survive him, including David and Tracy McCrossin of Woodland, Jay and Lynda Gustafson of South Carolina, Murray Walker 2.0 and Lauren of Presque Isle, Sally Sandstrom of New Sweden, Ken and Kelli Hixon of Westmanland, Tom and Sue Shutt, and Kevin and Karen Shutt all of New Hampshire.
Pat was predeceased by his mother, Donna Cyr, and his father, Vayne Bither, his brother, Stephen Bither, and a special friend Steve Sandstrom who Pat considered to be a brother.
Memorial services will be held at 11AM on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at the Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir Street, Caribou. Interment with military honors will follow at the Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery, Caribou. A time of continued fellowship and refreshments will be held.
During his last weeks, while talking with Marj, Pat said whenever his demise came if someone were to be so moved as to send flowers to the funeral, he wished they would instead spend the money on one of the following organizations that were near and dear to Pat’s heart. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to either the Ronald McDonald House in Portland, 250 Brackett Street, Portland, ME 04102, an organization that offered immense support during the birth of his grandsons Carter and Jack, or to the Northstars Little League Team of Stockholm, C/O Caribou Little League, P.O. Box 1331, Caribou, ME, 04736 please specify “Northstars Little League of Stockholm” in the memo line so that the funds can benefit the team that Pat coached for 11 years and where his three sons played.
