Caribou - On March 9th, 2018, this world lost a kind, gracious, and generous man. Oliver Rene Smith, 90 passed away peacefully with his family by his side. Born and raised in Boston, MA, Oliver attended Northeastern University and then entered the US Navy in 1945. After leaving the Navy, Oliver found himself in Caribou ME where he met the love of his life, Geraldine Bouchard, “the best girl in town”, as he loved to say. Oliver and Gerry married May 26th, 1954. Together, they raised two children, Kathryn and Stephen and were very active members of the community. Oliver was a dedicated member of the Lister Knowlton Post 9389 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Henry B. Pratt American Legion Post 15, and the Fred V. Brescia Council 1870 Knights of Columbus. Oliver, or “Smitty” as he was also known, was a dedicated father, uncle, brother, volunteer, friend to so many, and Red Sox fan. He loved spending time with the Bouchard Family, hosting many backyard barbecues and playing pranks with them. He lived to make others laugh, especially his wife of 62 years. Oliver had a unique and special way of connecting with people in the most sincere and thoughtful manner. Smitty will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Oliver is survived by Kathryn Smith and Karen Phillips of South Portland, and Stephen Smith and Nathanial Smith (grandson) of Rapid City, SD. He is also survived by two sisters, Lillian McDuffie of Huntsville, AL, and Patricia Lewis of Revere, MA. A memorial mass will be celebrated in June with a date and time to be announced by Mockler Funeral Home. Interment with Military Honors will be a the Northern Maine Veterans’ Cemetery.
