PRESQUE ISLE - Mildred Munson (née Dumond), died quietly on September 7, 2019, she was 92 years old. Millie, as she was known to friends and family, was the oldest of 14 children born to Mattie (Madore) and Isidore Dumond of Hamlin Plantation. Her life adventures began in Van Buren at the Sacred Heart Academy, where she graduated in 1945, with honours. She spent the next 5 years assisting her parents raise their large family, becoming a second mother to many of her younger siblings and known for baking the kids’ favourite confections.
In 1950 she moved to Miami, Florida and married Otis Frederick Munson, of Presque Isle, Maine. They eventually moved back to Maine and pursued various careers within the state that took them from Presque Isle to Portland and back to finally settle in Aroostook County. For the next several decades Millie raised her 4 boys on the Washburn Road in Presque Isle and at the St. Froid Lake camp. She worked tirelessly for St. Mary’s Catholic Church as a member of The Daughters of Isabella, holding several positions within the organization, including Regent, Vice Regent and Secretary. Her passion was working hard, keeping family close and doing for others.
Mildred was predeceased by her husband, Otis Frederick Munson. She is sorely missed by her 4 sons and their partners: Brian Munson (Mary) of Presque Isle, Jeffrey Munson (Lorrie) of Presque Isle, Kerry Munson (Ken) of Toronto and Scott Munson (Jayne) of Cumberland. Her grandchildren, who called her by various names (Grammy Mussey being the most popular) include: Andreanna Munson of Presque Isle, Taylor Munson of Singapore, Chelsea Munson of Eagle Lake, Haylee Jandreau (Jake) of Saco, Colbi Munson of Cumberland, and Jeremy Smalley of California. Many of her siblings predeceased her: Joe Dumond, Verna Dumond, Stacey Dumond, Frances Lavesseur and Don Dumond. Her remaining siblings, with whom she maintained a close relationship, and lifelong friends to Millie include: Robertine Lachance of Waterville, Jacqueline Demers of Epson, NH, Dick Dumond of Hermon and Jim Dumond of Van Buren. One could continue to list the dozens of in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, great grandchildren and all her special friends, but suffice to say, she leaves a wake of sadness for all who knew her.
A very special thank you goes out to those support givers at The Aroostook House of Comfort, Leisure Village and Seniors/Domestics Home Care Agency. There are some very caring people within these organizations who provided Millie with heartfelt support.
