Walter Lindy Mattson

STOCKHOLM - Walter Lindy Mattson, 93, passed away peacefully on September 30th, 2023 with his family by his side. Lindy was born on January 22, 1930 in Caribou, Maine. He was next to the youngest of eight children of Henning Victor Mattson and Adeline Gladys (Hedman) Mattson. They grew up in Jemtland and Stockholm, Maine as descendents of the first Swedish immigrants that settled in the area.

Lindy was very proud of his military service in the Navy during the Korean War 1951-54, achieving the rank DC3. He was assigned to the USS Nespelen AOG-55 Tanker traveling throughout the Mediterranean, East Coast and the Arctic. He carried on his love of his country by being a member of the American Legion Post in Stockholm for over 70 years.

He spent 30 years working at Loring Air Force Base as a supervisor at the heating plant, making a career of it and many friends along the way.

Lindy was best known for his passion of Fly Fishing from a young age. He was an avid angler with his highpoint on September 25, 1972 landing a 9lb 8 oz Landlocked Salmon at Kelly Log in Guerette, Maine. Entering the prestegious Maine “THE ONE THAT DIDN’T GET AWAY CLUB”.
Whether fishing in Alaska or his favorite lake or stream in Maine Lindy never met a stranger on the water. He loved to share his passion for fishing and hunting and was a life-long member of the Sportsman’s Inc.

Lindy is survived by his beloved and devoted wife Sylvia of 64 years, along with daughter Linda Leary and husband Michael of Anchorage AK, Marie Gorman and husband John of Augusta, grandchildren Erica and husband Leo, Kyle and wife Jaywon, Lukas and wife Katelyn, and great-granddaughter Charlotte. Lindy was a beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews whom he adored.

Lindy was predeceased by his parents, four brothers Charles, John, Jackie and Stanley and his three sisters, Phyllis, Margaret and Katherine. Lindy had a special place in his heart for Charles, his best friend and beloved brother, a loving sense of humor teasing each other to the end.

Thanks to the team at Cary Medical Center, and the Caribou Maine Veterans Home for all of their loving care of Lindy over the last couple of years. We witnessed unending compassion and care for Lindy during his stay. we are so proud of the care our Veterans receive each and every day.

The family requests that those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a contribution to the Stockholm American Legion Post 136 in honor of Walter Lindy Mattson.

Friends may call at the First Baptist Church of Stockholm, Main Street, Stockholm, on Thursday, October 5, 2023 from 9AM until time of services which will be held at 10AM. A time of continued fellowship and refreshments will follow. Interment with military honors will be in the Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery.
