Mack D. Haines

March 8, 1928 — June 18, 2022

Mack Dewey Haines, 94 of Caribou, husband of the late Phyllis R (Watson) Haines, passed away June 18, 2022, at the Aroostook House of Comfort.  He was born March 8, 1928, on the Davis Road in Woodland, the eldest child of the late Bennie and Ida (Newbegin) Haines. Mack grew up on the family farm owned by his parents in Woodland and later in Caribou when the family moved there. He attended and completed the 8th grade at the Henderson School in Woodland.

Mack married Phyllis R. Watson on November 20, 1947. He was a well-known self-employed carpenter in the Caribou area for many years.

Being a resident of Aroostook County, Mack took advantage of the many recreations the County had to offer.  During his lifetime Mack enjoyed: gardening, camping, fishing, hunting, and snowmobiling.

Mack was a current member and Past Master of Caribou Lodge #170 AF & AM. He was also a 32nd Degree member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Aroostook, Valley of Bangor and Valley of Portland. For the Valley of Aroostook, Mack was the first recipient of the Maine Council of Deliberation Meritorious Service Award.  Mack was also member of ANAH Shrine of Bangor, and of the Aroostook Shrine Club. As a Shriner, he actively volunteered at the Shrine Circus until his health would not allow him to do so anymore.

Mack is survived by his daughter, Peggy Belanger of Kenduskeag, ME, his sons and their wives, Steven Haines, Roger and Lynn Haines, Wayne and Carla Haines, and Neal and Elaine Haines, all of Caribou; nine grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.  His sister-in-law Norma Haines, sisters, Lulu Sharp and her husband Dale, Gladys Pelletier and her husband Larry all of Caribou, Laura Moran of MN, and Shirley Tarbox and husband Winfield of CT.

He was predeceased by his wife Phyllis of 63 years in 2011; infant brother, Daniel E. Haines, and brothers Frederick Newbegin and Duncan L. Haines, sister, Alice Conroy, daughter in-law Helen Haines, and son in-law Daniel Belanger.

The family would like to give its personal thanks to the Presque Isle Rehab and Nursing Center, Northern Light AR Gould Hospital, and the Aroostook House of Comfort for the care provided in the final months of Mack’s life.
