Lucille F. Gallagher

Lucille F. (Matte) Gallagher, 81, passed away Saturday, July 18, 2026 at the Caribou Healthcare Center from advanced Alzheimer's. She was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, October 21, 1944 the daughter Donat and Frances (Woodbury) Matte, and spent her early years growing up in Salem-Rockingham, NH and then in Windham, NH, where she attended and graduated from Pinkerton Academy. She met her future husband and the love of her life, Daniel W. Gallagher, when she was just 10 years old, at his older brother Eslie's wedding to her Aunt Priscilla (Woodbury). Even though, he was eight years older, she knew he was the man she was going to marry.

After graduating from Nursing school in New Hampshire, her grandmother paid for her to come to Maine to live with her Aunt and Uncle where she cared for their three children and worked at Cary Memorial Hospital as a LPN. She and Dan were reacquainted, and married on April 3, 1965. Lucy then worked with her husband on the family farm and raising four children. She also worked at Cary Medical Center from 1978-1984. In 1987, she went back to school, earning her accounting degree from Northern Maine Vocational Technical College. Lucille was a longtime member of the Caribou United Baptist Church. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting.

Lucy leaves behind her children Kathleen, Maureen, Daniel, and Laureen Gallagher, one grandchild, Finn Gallagher, one sister, Patricia Croston, two brothers, Stephen Matte Sr. and James Matte, and well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Daniel, her parents, a brother, Donat Matte Jr., and a sister, Sharon Rogers. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Cary Medical Center who assisted in her care during her stay there while awaiting placement, and to the staff at the Caribou Healthcare Center who cared for her for the past three months and seeing to her comfort as she transitioned from this life to the next. Their care was much appreciated.

Friends are invited to visit with the family at the Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir Street, Caribou, on Friday, July 24, 2026 from 11AM until time of services which will be held at 1PM from the chapel of the funeral home. Interment will be in the Webster Ward Cemetery - Limestone. A time of continued fellowship and refreshments will be held at the Caribou United Baptist Church following the services.
