Bangor and Caribou - Leila Fletcher Robertson, a month shy of 100, peacefully went to her rest in the Lord, on April 25, 2021 at Solstice Senior Living Center in Bangor. She was born in Van Buren on June 10, 1921, the daughter of Winfield Quimby and Hattie (Adams) Quimby. Leila was predeceased by her brother, Joseph Quimby.
Leila moved to Caribou when she was 15 years old. She continued with her passion for playing the piano under the tutelage of Margaret Bailey. She was a graduate from Caribou High School. Throughout her lifetime, Leila shared her musical gift in a dance band, playing the organ at the Gray Memorial Methodist Church for over 60 years and accompanying the Caribou Choral Society for 8+ years. She also played for a multitude of marriage ceremonies and funeral services in the County, and even a week before her passing, she directed a choral group at Solstice along with playing hymns every Sunday for the residents. Hers was a life of service.
Leila met Amos Fletcher, her first love, in Caribou High School and was married December 31, 1940. They had three children: Carolyn (Fletcher) Shaw, Frederick Fletcher (predeceased), and Patricia (Fletcher) Smith. Amos lost his battle to cancer, leaving Leila alone to raise three children. She went back to school to the University of Maine to get her degree in education and taught Kindergarten, first at Hilltop Elementary in Caribou, and then in Zippel Elementary in Presque Isle, a total of almost 20 years. Two years after Amos’ died, Leila remarried Charles M. Robertson of Presque Isle (predeceased), and embraced his three children, Michael Robertson (predeceased), Jeffrey Robertson, and Patrick Robertson, as her own.
Leila is survived by her two daughters Carolyn and Patricia, two step-sons Jeffrey and Patrick Robertson, 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. She stayed connected to each family, praying for them and supporting them throughout her life. Everywhere she went, Leila cared deeply for those around her. She was the life of the party even up until her passing, wanting the plans for her 100th birthday party to continue. Leila brought music, joy, and faith to all who knew her. In honor of her request, the family is gathering to have a private memorial service in June to celebrate her life.
