Hayden Southerland

August 9, 1917 — December 22, 2010

Hayden Leroy Sutherland, 93 of Woodland died Wednesday December 22, 2010 peacefully at the Maine Veterans Home in Caribou with family by his side. He was born August 9th 1917 in Woodland . He was the son of the late Adelbert and Marie (Hardacker) Sutherland and the eldest of a family of 12 children. Hayden attended Woodland schools and graduated from Caribou High School in 1935. Hayden was very proud of family and his farm and loved to reminisce on both with whom ever would lend an ear. After being in the military, serving as an aircraft mechanic during World War II, he lived in Caribou for a short time and returned again to Woodland. He was a self employed potato farmer until retirement in 1981. He was an avid gardner for many years and was especially proud of his telephone peas. Hayden was a sixty years member of the Gray Memorial United Methodist Church in Caribou. Surviving in addition to his wife of 61 years , Shirley (Spear) Sutherland are his four children: Rebecca E. Sutherland of New Sweden, Adelbert W. Sutherland and Brian H. Sutherland and his wife Jane both of Caribou and Paul L. Sutherland and his wife Debbie of Woodland; four grand children: Taylor H. Sutherland and his wife Ingrid of Mapleton, Kyle E. Sutherland of Seattle Wa, Logan R. and Gabrielle B. of Woodland. He is also survived by four sisters: Esther Page of Caribou, Eugenia (Jean) Gardner and her husband Elden of Portage, Bertha (Betty) Branscom of Caribou, Judith (Judi) Greenier and her husband Louis of Cross Lake, three brothers: Stanley of Hebron Ct. , Willis and his wife Gloria of Caribou, Russell of St. Petersburg Fl and a brother in law Bert Turner of Washburn. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Hayden was predeceased by three sisters and one brother: Mrs. Harold (Gretchen) Gallant, Mrs. Bert (Margaret) Turner and Mrs. Colie (Margorie) Giggie and brother Roland Sutherland who died very young, brothers-in-law: Vincent Page, Edward Branscom and Robert Pelletier. Friends may call at the Mockler Funeral Home 24 Reservoir Street Caribou, Tuesday, December 28,2010 from 12 noon until time of services, which will be held at 2:00pm from the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. Thomas Bentum, officiating. Friends who wish to contribute in memory of Hayden may do so to the Gray Memorial United Methodist Church. Envelopes may be obtained through the funeral home.
