Helen (Celia) Stetson

WASHBURN and WADE – Helen I. (Celia) Stetson, 92, wife of the late George Stetson, died December 8, 2023 at her Woodland residence. She was born in Caribou, December 14, 1930 the daughter of the late Clifford and Lydia (Mallory) Ireland. She was a graduate of Washburn High School and she married George Stetson on July 16, 1949. Celia served as the town clerk of Wade for many years and also enjoyed working during the potato harvest. She loved the outdoors, and was a member of the Washburn Trail Runners Snowmobile Club where she was one of the cooks for their weekend breakfasts. Celia was known for her famous Nana’s donuts, and her hospitality. Her kitchen was always a warm and welcome gathering place for relatives and friends. She had a love for fishing and hunting, her biggest buck was 205 pounds. Celia was a longtime member of the NRA. She and George loved travelling in their RV, exploring 49 states, excluding Hawaii because of her refusal not to be able to see shore or to fly there. She is survived by her children, George Stetson Jr. and wife Marilyn of Waldoboro, Todd Stetson and wife Robin of Hermon, and Larina Anderson and husband Gerald of Woodland, nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, ten great-great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, as well as her large extended beloved family. She was predeceased by her husband George in 2008, two sons, John and Terry Stetson, as well as siblings, Fred and Clifford Ireland, Frances Harris, Iolia Langley, Mary-Bearnice Wright, Julia Annie Doody, Hallie and Twaila Ireland. Spring interment will be in the Riverside Extension Cemetery in Washburn at a date and time to be announced by the Mockler Funeral Home. The family wishes to extend a special thank-you to Dr. Caleb Swanberg and Professional Home Nursing, Sheila Caron, for the fine care and compassion given to Celia. Friends who wish to contribute in memory of Celia may do so through  the Washburn Trail Runners, P.O. Box 561, Washburn, ME 0478, an association that was meaningful to both Celia and George.
