CARIBOU – Florian L. Levesque, 81, died January 30, 2020 in Van Buren. He was born in Fort Kent, March 6, 1938 the son of Alfred “Fred” and Julienne (Plourde) Levesque. At the age of 13, Florian moved to the Caribou area with his family, and graduated from Caribou High School in 1956. He joined the 1st Battalion 152 Field Artillery Maine Army National Guard, was educated as a medic at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, for 6 months, and served from October 21, 1955 until October 20, 1962. During that time, Florian was also employed by the A &P and Graves Red & White grocery stores. He joined Maine Public Service as a boiler operator for the Caribou Steam Plant which extended for 36 years until his early retirement in 1999.
Florian and his wife, Sandi (Squirrell), were married on August 1, 1959 and recently celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary. They raised three wonderful children who survive him: Sharon Levesque of Fort Fairfield, Kevin Levesque and wife Crystal of Presque Isle, and Andrew Levesque of Caribou. Also surviving him are three grandchildren: Nicholas Levesque of Westbrook, Logan Levesque of Fort Kent and one step grandchild, Luc Levesque of Caribou, his sisters, Geraldine Azzarelli of Dunmore, PA and Judy Gagnon and husband Robert of Brownfield, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was predeceased by his older brother, George Vernon Levesque and wife Louise of Indiana, O’Neil Levesque and wife Lorraine of Hartford, CT, brother-in-law, Joseph Azzarelli of Dunmore, PA, a sister, Earline Stidham of Ohio, and an infant granddaughter, Kristen Sandra Levesque.
Florian was active in his parish as a Eucharistic Minister for 41 ½ years and served as Co-President and Chairman of the Worship & Spirituality Committee of the Holy Rosary Parish Council. He was a quiet and gentle man who suffered silently for many years from the debilitating disease Occulopherengeal Muscular Dystrophy which ultimately took his life after a brave struggle over the last six months.
Donations may be made in his memory to the Holy Rosary Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 625, Caribou, ME 04736. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, February 3, 2020 at 11am at the Parish of the Precious Blood Holy Rosary Catholic Church. A time of continued fellowship and refreshments will be held in the parish center following the mass. Spring interment will be held in the Old Holy Rosary Cemetery.
