Ernest William Stein Jr., 80, of New Sweden, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2024, surrounded by family.

Born in Long Island, New York, to Dr. Ernest and Marion (Valerius) Stein, Ernie spent his formative years in Pittsfield, Unity, and Winter Harbor. An adventurous spirit, he traveled across the U.S. and Canada; however, no matter how far he roamed, his heart always led him back to the Pine Tree State. For the past 40 years, Ernie and his devoted wife, Clare, built a rich, quiet, and fulfilling life in Aroostook County.

After a few years of college, Ernie took a significant step by joining the Air Force, where he honed his mechanical skills—a passion that stayed with him throughout his life. Upon his discharge, he embarked on a long career with Cianbro Corporation, working on projects along the Eastern Seaboard. Known for his sharp wit and quiet demeanor, Ernie had a unique ability to forge connections wherever he went, leaving a lasting impression on those who knew him.

He was a master fixer, capable of repairing anything with an engine. Ernie's talents extended into several hobbies that often drained his wallet but brought him immense joy. He loved sailing, finding peace as he harnessed the wind and navigated the open waters. Gardening was another of Ernie's passions; he took pride in cultivating a variety of vegetables and sharing the bounty over good music with dear friends. His love of cars bordered on obsession; it wasn’t uncommon for him to return from errands with a new set of wheels. Whether hunting down a classic, rebuilding an engine, or simply enjoying a weekend drive, the freedom of the open road invigorated him.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Christian Stein, and his beloved son, Ernest William Stein III. Yet, he leaves behind a loving family: his wife, Clare; daughters Lisa and her husband Jeffrey Pierce of Clinton, and Lynne and her husband Mark Chase of Florida; and grandsons William Chase, Benjamin Pierce, and Ryan Chase, who filled him with pride. He also leaves his sister, Valerie Sinclair, and her husband Hershel; sister-in-law Anne Stein; brother-in-law Rick Cyr and his wife Rhonda; along with a niece, nephews, cousins, and countless dear friends.

Ernie’s legacy is one of kindness, craftsmanship, and quiet humor. He touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed.

A memorial service celebrating Ernie’s life will be held on Friday, October 11, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Mockler Funeral Home in Caribou. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research or the Central Aroostook Humane Society in Presque Isle.
