Charles Hitchcock

It’s with a heavy heart, and yet so much gratitude for a life well-lived that we share the news of Charles Robert Hitchcock’s passing. Charles, our dear ”papa,” Left us on July 22, 2026, At the age of 80, while he was visiting his son in Ohio. He was surrounded by the love of his devoted family, which brought him immense comfort in his final moments.

If you knew Charles, you knew his roots run deep in Caribou, Maine. Born there on June 12, 1946, to Charles and Hester Hitchcock, his hometown and Aroostook county were truly in his blood. After finishing school, he dedicated his life to the land, becoming a passionate potato farmer. He poured his heart and soul into the fields, nurturing them with a dedication that brought him so much pride. And beyond those vast potato fields, you’d often find him in his meticulously tended garden from dawn till dusk, a true testament to his love for growing vegetables.

But Charles wasn’t all work and no play! He had a real spark for harness racing. He was a familiar and enthusiastic face at the local fairs, especially when his sons were competing. He absolutely loved the thunder of the hooves, the competitive spirit, and the camaraderie he shared with his friends.

Above all else, Charles‘s greatest joy was his family. He shared an incredible 50 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Irma, building a lifetime of shared dreams in a truly enduring partnership. Their golden anniversary represented a lifetime of unwavering devotion, shared laughter, and mutual support, leaving behind a profound legacy of love and companionship that touched countless lives.

Charles was an incredibly proud father to his two sons, Michael Hitchcock, who lives in South Vienna, Ohio, and Christopher Hitchcock and his wife Kelli, from Etna,Maine. Charles immense pride in his two sons was always clear. He absolutely beamed when he talked about them, always thrilled to watch them into the men they are today.

Charles cherished memory lives on through his brother Dale Hitchcock of Caribou, and his sister Carol Fitzherbert, of Presque Isle. Their bond with Charles was a treasured part of their lives, and his absence will be profoundly felt by both.

Charles leaves behind his wonderful Granddaughters Brooke (Chris) Wilcox, and Stephanie (Noah) Bernard of Easton. He was also blessed with numerous great grandchildren.

Among all his cherished relationships, Charles shared a truly profound and unbreakable bond with his grandson, Caleb. “Papa”as he was fondly called often remarked that all of his achievements, his family was his greatest source of pride, and Caleb, in particular, brought an unparalleled joy and deep sense of connection to his life. Their bond was a beautiful testament to what special love an only a grandparent and grandchild can share.

Charles also maintained a deeply close relationship with his sister and brother in laws and leaves behind a host of cherished nieces and nephews who will fondly remember his generous spirit and unwavering warmth.

Charles is now reunited with his loving parents, Charles and Hester Hitchcock; his brother Larry Hitchcock; his special daughter, Kimberly, who’s memory he will always held so dear.

A graveside side service will be held on Saturday August 15th, at 11am at the Greenridge Cemetery. Pastor Goupille will be officiating, leading us in service of remembrance and reflection. Following the service, we warmly invite family and friends to join us at the VFW Hall in Caribou to share stories and remember the good times and honor a truly wonderful man.
