Carrol O. Larrabee

Caribou-Carroll Ora Larrabee 77, died May 3, 2011 at Caribou following a brief illness. He was born in Milo April 22, 1934 the son of the late Clarence and Marion (Blanchard) Larrabee. He was a graduate of Milo High School, the US Naval Academy Medical School, Bethesda, Maryland as a radiology technologist in 1959 as well as receiving a B.S. degree in Business Management from Ricker College in 1980. He married Virginia Mae Stone October 25, 1957. Carroll began his long working career at Maine Leather in Dover Foxcroft. He then served with the US Navy from 1953-1973, where he trained at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Virginia, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and the US Naval Medical School in Bethesda. During this period he played trumpet in the Recruit Training Command Band. He served with the 3rd Medical Battalion, 3rd Marine Division in Okinawa, US Naval Hospital, Newport, R.I, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, Cherry Point, N.C., Fitzsimons General Hospital, Denver, Colorado, Military Sea Transportation Services, Oakland, Ca., USNS General W.H.Gordon, 2nd Battalion 7th Marines 1st Marine Division in Vietnam and the Eighth Naval District in New Orleans. Carroll was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, serving as president from 1972-1973. Following his retirement from the military he was employed as an x- ray and nuclear medicine Technologist at Cary Medical Center for several years. Following his retirement from Cary, and not one to remain idle, Carroll was employed at various area businesses. He was a true patriot and he loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Following major surgery in 2002, and a decline in health, his riding lawnmower was his mode of transportation. He could be seen happily mowing his lawn and his friends at Spud Speedway nicknamed him “Lawnmower Man”. He had a keen sense of humor and took great pleasure in wiggling his ears to make his grandchildren laugh, as well as many adults in the area. Carroll loved to read history and war books. Surviving in addition to his wife of over 53 years, Virginia of Caribou, his son and daughter in law Joseph and Veronica Larrabee of Caribou, four daughters and three sons in law; Nancy and Marcel Bosse of Caribou, Helen Larrabee of Huntsville, TX., Debra and John Cook of Caribou and Carol and Cass Edwards of Auburn. His grandchildren; Janet Bosse, Audrey Larrabee, Madison Lively, Shawna, Elizabeth, and Chelsea Cook, Brandon, Robyn and Nerissa Larrabee, and Oscar and Amber Edwards. Great grandchildren, Damian Theriault, Calie and Elizabeth Mecais, Teagan Dougherty, Marleia Stevens and Charlotte Larrabee. Many nieces and nephews. Mr. Larrabee was predeceased by a brother Keith and three sisters Murial, Helen and Marilyn. Memorial services with military honors will be held 12:00 noon Friday May 6, 2011 at the Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery Caribou with Rev. Ron Rosser officiating.
