CARIBOU – Carl Walter Ouellette, 69, died March 1, 2021 in Portland following an extended illness. He was born in Caribou on December 6, 1951. Carl was a 1970 graduate of Caribou High School and then earned his Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Maine at Fort Kent in 1974. He married his high school sweetheart, Annella Peterson, on August 11, 1973. Carl was hired in 1974 by the Caribou School Department as a fifth-grade teacher at Caribou Intermediate School and retired 30 years later as the Technology Coordinator for the school system. ‘Mr. O’, as he was commonly known to his students, truly enjoyed his long career, both in teaching and in the Technology Department. He was involved in numerous educational organizations over the years, including his positions as president of the Caribou Teacher’s Association, chair of the Central Computer Committee, and founding member of the Association of Computer Technology Educators of Maine. He was proud to be a member of Governor King’s Task Force on Technology and also helped to institute and maintain Gov. King’s Laptop Initiative at Caribou Middle School. He was also the chair of Caribou’s first successful State Technology Grant Committee. Carl was a member of the Caribou Parks and Recreation Committee. He was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Carl had a lifelong passion for the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, often traveling to Allagash and Long Lake where he was truly at peace. He loved spending time with family and friends, especially his grandchildren who held a special place in his heart. Carl will be remembered as the family handyman and was always willing to lend a hand when called upon. He was a devoted golfer who made many friendships while a member of both the Caribou and Limestone Country Clubs. Watching sports while sitting in his recliner was a favorite pastime but what he truly cherished was the times he was able to watch his grandkids perform on the field, court, or stage. Carl was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Harriet (Arnsdorff) Ouellette as well as his brother, Robert (Bob) Ouellette. Surviving in addition to his wife of over 47 years, Annella, are their sons, Josh Ouellette and his wife Karen, and Jason Ouellette, his beloved grandchildren Claire, Colby, and Reagan, all of Caribou, sisters-in-law, Terry Ouellette, Carolyn Larson and husband Leonard, Pat Lombard and husband Doug, nieces and nephews, Rachel Michaud, Danielle Taggett, Meaghan Cousins, Adam Lombard, Greg, Patrick, and Trenton Larson, and Jodi Pipenbacher. Friends may visit with the family Sunday, March 14, 2021 from 2pm until 4pm at the Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir Street, Caribou. Please be mindful of others by practicing social distancing, wearing a face covering and be aware that the numbers of people allowed in the building at one time will be limited. A celebration of Carl’s life will be held at a date and time to be announced.
