Stockholm- Calvin Peter Bourgoine 77, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes at his home. He was born in Caribou on November 19, 1947, the ninth of ten children of John and Mary Lilianne (Cote) Bourgoine. Growing up, Peter worked on his family’s potato farm in New Sweden, and attended schools in New Sweden and Caribou. After graduating from Caribou High School, he joined the United States Army, and achieved the NCO rank of SP5 while stationed in Kitzingen Germany during the Vietnam War.
After leaving military service, Peter met the love of his life and on November 25, 1972, married his wife of 52 years, Lorraine Guimond, of Saint-Quentin, N.B. Peter and Lorraine settled initially in Caribou, where Peter owned and operated a successful fire protection and inspection business for many years until his retirement. Eventually, Peter and Lorraine moved to Madawaska Lake where they loved the peace and tranquility of the lake and boating. Peter was actively involved in the lake community and served as a road commissioner for decades. He was a member of the Sportsmen, Inc. Lodge in Stockholm, and a past member of the American Legion.
Peter was an avid gardener; he was renowned for growing and hybridizing prized hostas. Never veering far from his farming roots, he tended a spectacular vegetable garden each year. He enjoyed fishing, snowmobiling and carpentry. A fine woodworking craftsman, he designed and created unique bird houses, many of which can be seen throughout the lake region of Northern Maine.
Peter’s engaging personality, dry wit, and sincere heart were hallmarks of his life. He tenderly cared for his wife, parents and sister during their long health battles. He was able to fix anything and was always the first to volunteer to lend a helping hand.
Peter was beloved by his family, and will be missed by his wife, and his surviving family: brother John H. Bourgoine and wife Brenda; sisters Agnes Porter, and Lauretta Blackstone and husband Orman, all of Caribou; sisters Joyce Kohler of Austell, GA, and Victoria St. Peter and husband David of Stockholm, many nieces and nephews, and his lifelong friend Alan Landeen. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Thomas Bourgoine, and his sisters Geraldine Morrow, Valada Delaney, and Mariel Dewkett.
