Betty Jean Johnston

June 10, 1955 — January 21, 2026

Caribou

Betty Johnston, 70, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2026, at a local hospital from health complications.

She was born in Caribou, June 10, 1955, the daughter of the late Harley and Mable Hewitt of Woodland.

Throughout her life, she held careers at Maine Potato Service, Mecon/Control Devices, Cary Medical Center and most recently, she spent many years employed with SITEL Corporation until beginning her much-deserved retirement.

Betty had a kind and caring way about her. She always tried to see the best in people and had a genuine heart. It was second nature for her to help others any way she could and never asked for or expected anything in return. Her deep empathy for people and animals was apparent to all who knew her. The world news sometimes made her sad, crime shows made her anxious, but a good western or Star Trek episode was right up her alley. Throughout the years of medical struggles, nursing staff always commented on her strength, sweet demeanor and sense of humor.

She was content with simple things, wanted the very best for those she cared about, celebrated the successes of others, gave them comfort in their losses and was the happiest when those she loved were happy and healthy.

Betty’s compassion, courage and humanity have been and will remain an inspiration. The loving impact she made on so many hearts throughout her precious time here is a legacy she leaves behind with us. She will be missed deeply.

She is survived by her significant other of 23 years, David Pelletier. Her son, Scott Hewitt. Her daughter, Lora Neilander and fiancé, Sheldon Ketch. Brothers: Roger Hewitt and wife JoAnne. Dennis Hewitt and wife, Michelle. Gerald Hewitt and wife, Dale. A sister, Bonnie Bernaiche (Hewitt) and husband Mike.

Her grandchildren: Ashton Beaver, Alex Beaver, Emma Coty, Alyssa Burba (Hewitt), Andrew Hewitt and Emmett Anderson. One great-grandchild, Harper Ann Beaver.

As well as her "bonus" daughters Cassandra and Heather and her "bonus" grandchildren: Landan, Braeden, Kiahna, Lexie and Brody.

Many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

In addition to her parents, Betty was predeceased by her brothers Ronald Hewitt and Gary Hewitt, sisters Sharon Johnston, Brenda Johnston, Pauline Burton (Hewitt) and significant other, Darrell Neilander.
