CARIBOU – Annette (Levasseur) Harmon, 90, passed away peacefully December 22, 2019 at Crosswinds Residential Care in Fort Kent following a period of declining health. She was born in Van Buren, December 30, 1928 the daughter of the late Eddie and Alma (Cyr) Levasseur. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Van Buren in 1947, and was a 1949 graduate of the University of Maine at Fort Kent. In 1974, she earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the University of Maine at Presque Isle. She married Thomas A. Harmon on June 29, 1957. Their 6 month courtship began when Annette befriended one of Tom’s sisters. Annette learned from her that she had a brother who was single named Tom. She searched him out far and wide in the phonebook successfully and asked him on a double date to a New Years Eve party at Loring Air Force Base. Annette was raised on her parents potato farm in Hamlin, the eldest of 7 children (five brothers, Rene, Gerald, Herman, Eddie Jr, Cecil and one sister, Eileen). Annette was a longtime devoted member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, where she was a 65 year member of the Daughters of Isabella. Annette had a lifelong career devoted to young children as both a teacher and social worker. She taught elementary school in Madawaska & Keegan and was a social worker for the State of Maine Foster Care program. As a dedicated, loving wife and mother following the birth of her four children, she remained at home to care for them. Annette returned to work in 1974 as the first bilingual 4th grade elementary school teacher in the Caribou School System at Teague Park School, retiring in 1990.
In retirement, Annette remained active in the Daughters and volunteered in various ministries at Holy Rosary including Eucharistic Minister and visiting the homebound. Annette enjoyed traveling with her Tom to various parts of the United States/Canada. She loved to explore the beautiful sights and always made a point to learn the history of every place they visited. The long distance cross country trips were always planned within proximity to their children which allowed for precious time with family which she cherished. Music was an integral part of her childhood. She was gifted at the piano, playing since she was 5 years old. As an adolescent and young adult, she played for her parents and their friends at the farm when they hosted social gatherings. She loved music and to dance with her Tom whenever she had the chance. Annette will be remembered for her loving nature, bubbly personality, contagious smile, affection toward others often demonstrated her by special bear hugs. Annette gifted her family with her superlative farm grown homemaking skills from tailoring entire wardrobes for her children when they were youngsters, cooking/baking (most notably her scrumptious fruit pies) to canning/freezing vegetables, fruit sauces, berry jams, ketchup, bread & butter/dilled pickles each season from the bountiful harvest of Tom’s VERY large family garden.
Mrs Harmon was a past Regent and Vice Regent for the Holy Rosary Circle of the Daughters of Isabella. She was a member of the Aroostook Retired Educators Association, Retired Educators Maine Education Association, University of Maine Alumni Association and supporter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI). Surviving in addition to her beloved husband of over 62 years, Thomas, are their children, Gregory Harmon and wife Kathleen of Prattville, AL, Denise Harmon of Albuquerque, NM, Suzanne “Suzy” Withee and husband David of Bedford, NH/Southport, Maine, her grandchildren, Mark, Colleen, and Christopher Harmon, Noah and Benjamin Stern, Alexandra and Catherine Withee, a great-grandchild, Olivia Harmon, several nieces/nephews and six brothers and sisters-in-law combined. Annette is also survived by her cherished and only sister, Eileen Levasseur of Burlington, VT. Mrs. Harmon is predeceased by her beloved son, Peter A Harmon. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in June 2020 at a date and time to be announced in the local newspaper by the Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir Street, Caribou.
