Anna Marie Spooner Roberts died at Caribou Nursing Home after a period of declining health on July 7, 2025 , two days after her 108th birthday.
Anna was born in Caribou, Maine, July 5, 1917, the daughter of Silas B. and Mercy (Smith) Spooner who were farmers on the East Presque Isle Road. She attended the Green Ridge School, a one-room schoolhouse for all eight grades. She moved to town after she completed eighth grade and attended Caribou High School graduating with the class of 1933. She was employed in the Town Office for the City of Caribou for 45 years from 1934 until she retired in 1979. She was a lifelong resident of Caribou.
Anna and W. Prescott Roberts, Jr were married on December 1, 1943 and were happily married for 50 years. He predeceased her in 1994. She was also predeceased by her brother and his wife, Kenneth L. and Jane Spooner, her nephew, Kenneth B. Spooner and his wife, Ginita Spooner, her brother-in-law and his wife, Duane B. and Mary G. Roberts, her niece, Martha J. Roberts, and by a very dear friend, Ruth Noyes.
Surviving her are two nieces, Mary E. Albert and her husband, Jerry of Gilford, N.H., and Elaina A. Griffith and her husband, Bruce of Greer, S. C. She also leaves a cousin, Wayne Smith and his wife Patty of Caribou and special friends, Brenda Curtis and Constance Ennis of Caribou and Paulette Landeen of Madawaska.
Anna was a member of the Gray Memorial United Methodist Church in Caribou and belonged to the Jenny Lyons Circle. She was active in the Afternoon Bowling League and was a member of the Caribou Day Extension and Widow’s Support Group. For many years following her retirement she enjoyed cross-country skiing, gardening, and a camp at Madawaska Lake. In her retirement she also enjoyed traveling to Florida, Washington, D.C. and to several areas in New England. She had a special love for animals, particularly dogs and owned several over her lifetime. On July 5, 2022, the City of Caribou presented her with the Boston Post Cane in recognition of her 105th birthday, formally acknowledging her as the community's oldest resident.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Gray Memorial Methodist Church, 2 Prospect Street in Caribou on July 22, 2025 at 1:00 pm. Interment will be in the family lot at Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that contributions may be made in her memory to the Gray Memorial Methodist Church or to the Central Aroostook Humane Society, Cross Street, Presque Isle, Maine.
